Withdrawal Policy | Start Abroad Programs

All Start Abroad participants must confirm their participation in their program by the date in their conditional acceptance letter. If you withdraw after committing to participate in your Start Abroad program or if your acceptance to the program is rescinded, you may be responsible for University of Miami tuition and any non-recoverable costs. You remain individually responsible for any financial obligation to a program provider/institution, the Office of Study Abroad and the University of Miami.

  • Voluntary Withdrawal

Students initiating a voluntary withdrawal must submit their official notice to withdraw by completing an official withdrawal form.

The submission must come from the student and include the full name of the Start Abroad program and reason for withdrawal. Students will receive an auto-reply from the Office of Study Abroad confirming receipt of their withdrawal. If the student is under the age of 18 at the time of submission, a follow up email will be sent to their parent/guardian for confirmation.

The Start Abroad team will follow up to inform the student of any additional requirements/information needed and to confirm any potential fees associated with withdrawal. The date submitted will be recorded as the official date of withdrawal.

  • Involuntary Withdrawal

Students subject to involuntary withdrawal will be informed via email sent to their official email address of their withdrawal. The date the email is sent will be recorded as the official date of withdrawal.

Start Abroad partners reserve the right to not accept students or rescind admission. Students will be informed of their withdrawal either by the Start Abroad partner of the Office of Study Abroad.

Housing Abroad

Independent Housing:

Students participating in any Start Abroad program are required to reside in the housing coordinated by their program. Living in independent housing is not permitted. All the programs can provide accommodations assuming the students share these in advance of arrival.

Removal from Housing Abroad

Students participating in any Start Abroad program are required to abide by the policies and procedures set forth by the provider or institution. If for any reason a student is removed from the provided housing, you will no longer be eligible to remain in the program. This will result in forfeiting your semester abroad, and you will be responsible for any financial penalties associated with that dismissal. UM will not issue any reimbursements. Failure to abide by policies may result in your dismissal from the Start Abroad program and a rescinded offer of admission, putting your UM enrollment at risk. Students who are dismissed may be responsible for additional charges, which may include the full cost of the Start Abroad program.

Code of Conduct

All Start Abroad participants and UM students, must abide by the policies and procedures outlined in the Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook. This includes but is not limited to prohibition of disorderly conduct, possession of drugs, and consumption and possession of alcohol by individuals who are under 21. Such behaviors will not be tolerated throughout the entirety of your time as a Start Abroad and UM student. In the event of a violation abroad that results in the termination of the student’s participation in the program, the student will receive no refund, will not receive academic credit for the program, and the return to the student’s home shall be at the student’s personal expense.

Failure to abide by policies may result in your dismissal from the Start Abroad program and a rescinded offer of admission, putting your UM enrollment at risk.
