  • Highlights

Cohort-based: UPrograms involve a cohort of UM students who participate in academic as well as co-curricular activities together. Cohort sizes range by location from small (5 to 25 students), medium (40 to 75 students), and large (100 to 200 students).

Curriculum: One feature that makes UPrograms unique is a foundations course, which is specially designed to enhance and enrich your study abroad experience. Courses and co-curricular activities vary by program.

In addition, students would have access to most of the curriculum offered at the program location. Though some partner institutions have limited academic scope, most offer a wide variety of courses for students in many different majors.

Grades and credits: UProgram participants will receive letter grades and UM credits that will be a part of their UM GPA and count toward their degree progress.

Credits earned through a University of Miami study abroad program are considered in-residence credits at UM, meaning you will fulfill UM's requirement that the last 45 credit hours be earned in residence. Seniors, juniors, and transfer students can study abroad on a UM program and still meet UM's credit residency requirement.

Housing: Housing will be arranged for UProgram participants, the cost of which is included in the Program Fee (additional to UM tuition) and paid directly to UM.

Should you prefer arranging your own housing, you would not be eligible for a UProgram; consider applying to a UM Partner Programwhere you may arrange your housing privately.

Duration: UPrograms are semester programs. Program dates vary by location.

  • Costs and Financial Aid

    UM billed fees:

    • Students will be billed a $150 Study Abroad Fee in CaneLink.
    • Study abroad students will be billed UM tuition in CaneLink, and will pay tuition directly to UM.
    • UProgram participants will be billed a Program Fee in CaneLink which will cover housing abroad, as well as some additional fees (varies by program).

Scholarships/financial aid: UM scholarships and financial aid can be used on all UPrograms. Students are encouraged to meet with a financial assistance representative at CanesCentral to verify how your scholarships/financial aid will apply to your study abroad program.

Intern strives to preserve South African neighborhood’s past

As part of the University’s study abroad experience in South Africa, Kieran Collins applied his marketing skills to help a Cape Town museum resurrect the history of a neighborhood whose residents were displaced decades ago.

UGalapagos program offers a window into wildlife

Open to all University undergraduates, the UGalapagos Biology semester-long experience allows students to live with a host family in Quito and the Galápagos Islands while they take courses through the Universidad San Francisco de Quito focused on biology and field research.
