Faculty-Led Programs

faculty-led faculty-led

Culturally Immersive. Experiential.

Led by UM faculty.

UM professors lead groups of students overseas, usually teaching one or two courses over a period of one to six weeks. The majority of these programs run during the summer, but options exist for January and spring break intersession as well.

  • Program Highlights

UM faculty members design and lead these courses abroad, allowing you to take a UM course in a unique, off-campus setting. These programs maximize the location by integrating experiential learning opportunities and impactful site visits.

Most programs are open to all majors, and you can consult with your academic advisor to determine how the credits will apply toward your degree requirements.

  • Financial Aid and Scholarships

Funding for summer programs is limited, and most forms of financial aid are not available for short-term, faculty-led study abroad programs. Students are strongly encouraged to consult with a financial aid advisor at CanesCentral to review their eligibility and options before applying.

Undergraduate students may apply for the Study Abroad Stipend to help offset costs associated with studying abroad. Special consideration is given to students with demonstrated financial need. Details, eligibility, and application instructions are available on the Study Abroad Scholarships page.

Summer stipend application deadline: February 1

  • Application Deadlines

    January Intersession               November 1

    Spring Break Intersession       November 1

    Summer Term                          February 1

  • Deposit Payment: Due Before Application Deadline

Students applying for a faculty-led program must submit a non-refundable deposit as part of the application process. Deposits must be received before the program’s application deadline.

    Summer Application Deadline: February 1.

    Please Note:

    • If you participate in the study abroad program, the deposit will be applied toward the overall program cost.
    • If you withdraw from the study abroad program, the deposit will not be refunded. Additional withdrawal fees may also apply.
    • Some programs may reach capacity before the application deadline. Submitting your application and deposit before the deadline does not guarantee acceptance.

For information on how to submit a deposit visit Deposit Payments.

  • Enrollment Minimums and Maximums

Programs need a minimum number of students to run; if enrollment is too low, the program may be cancelled and deposits refunded.

Some programs may fill before the deadline. Submitting your application and deposit early does not guarantee a spot. If a program is full, your deposit will be refunded.

  • Withdrawal Policy: Starts at Conditional Acceptance

The withdrawal policy takes effect as soon as you are conditionally accepted into a faculty-led program. Please review the Study Abroad Withdrawal Policy for faculty-led programs for complete details.

Once you submit your application and the $500 non-refundable deposit, the Study Abroad Office makes financial commitments on your behalf. Withdrawing after this point may result in additional fees, up to and including the full cost of the program, depending on the timing of your withdrawal.

If you have questions, please contact your study abroad advisor.
